SAN DIEGO — A man found unconscious in the street at the intersection of University Avenue and Vermont Street near Balboa Park died a short time later Sunday evening.

San Diego police said no one was located who had seen what happened, but the man had severe head injuries and appeared to have been hit by a vehicle. The first 911 call was recorded at 7:08 p.m.
A bystander attempted to perform CPR on the man without success, according to radio reports. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A portion of University Avenue was temporarily closed to traffic during the investigation.
